REAL/32 supports a wide range of multiport cards from various manufacturers. IMS sells a range of cards manufactured in the UK that we recommend for use with REAL/32. Buffered cards offer a cost effective solution for small to medium sized systems whilst intelligent cards offer maximum performance for larger systems.

BUFFERED MULTIPORT CARDS

Buffered cards contain a small character buffer for each serial port on the card which means the main CPU processes a complete buffer full of characters at a time. They are recommended for all systems except the very largest. IMS offers these cards in 4 and 8-port versions. They both offer lSA/EISA configurable I/O addresses and IRQ level.

INTELLIGENT MULTIPORT CARDS

Intelligent cards contain a processor and a large character buffer which effectively removes most of the processing required by the main CPU. They are recommended for large systems where many terminals are locally connected to a single computer. IMS offers both expandable and non-expandable 16-port intelligent cards plus a multiplexing communications controller.

PCC/16i INTELLIGENT CARD

This card provides a cost-effective alternative to the expandable intelligent card and is particularly effective where it is unlikely that the system will be expanded beyond 16 ports.

It is possible to install up to 4 cards in a single machine under REAL/32 subject to power supply limitations. The design of this card keeps host CPU overhead to a minimum and maximises the system performance as the number of users increases.

SUPERPORT RISC BASED INTELLIGENT CARD

The SuperPort intelligent card is our top-of-the-range multiport card. It's power comes from a specialised RISC processor that allows the card to maintain a very high transmission rate on all ports even under heavy load. The SuperPort offers ease of expansion to a maximum of 64-ports and only takes up a single slot in a machine.

The basic system consists of the controller card located in the host computer and an externally powered 16-port terminal adaptor module which is connected to the controller card.

The system is designed so that additional 8-port modules can be stacked to a maximum of 64-ports.

GLOBESERVER MULTIPORT CARD

The GlobeServer is a multi-port card designed for serial connections over a wide area.

Ideal for head office/branch office scenarios, the GlobeServer consists of an intelligent high-speed front-end processor (FEP) card that has two high-speed communications channels. Each channel can be connected to up to four GloberServer hubs (depending on the communication medium). Each GlobeServer hub has eight RJ45 serial ports and one DB25 parallel port. There are two further RJ45 ports for daisy chaining the hubs together. The hubs can be connected locally up to a mile away from the FEP via a single twisted pair cable.
